Can you buy laptop breakdown cover a month after buying the laptop/netbook?

Question by DivineKiss: Can you buy laptop breakdown cover a month after buying the laptop/netbook?
I’ve seem a netbook I want in argos but can’t afford to buy the cover at the same time as the netbook. Provided the netbook is in working order can i buy laptop cover the following month?

Answer by David d
Yes, you can get cover after initial purchase, but think carefully before you do. Most warranty cover is not worth the paper its written on , it is offered to gain extra revenue out of each customer, you would need to read the small print carefully.

Most new items purchased have an automatic 12 month warranty by law (there are a few exceptions). So, if anything should go wrong physically with the hardware within 12 months, then it should be returned to the retailer to be fixed or replaced (software problems are not included).

I would however, talk to one of the reputable insurance companies about new for old theft and accidental damage cover with maintenance cover included, it should be cheaper as well.

Buying memory for Laptop?

Question by Master: Buying memory for Laptop?
I have a Compaq Presario F700 and I’m looking into buying 2 sticks of 1GB RAM for it.

Through the HP sites memory finder, it came up with this

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?product_code=EP863AA

Then, I looked at Amazon.com for cheaper ones, and found this

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000PCX780/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

So will the one on Amazon work on my laptop? if you are not 100% sure then your answer doesn’t help at all

Answer by J’s Warrior
The one on amazon looks great, Kingston is a good brand of card & the price is good. I purchased mine from FRY’s went up to 2-2gb cards for $ 30.00, & didn’t have to wait for shipping. The techs @ FRY’s will know what to get you, for your system.

Has anyone had problems with buying a laptop from Office Depot?

Question by inscrutable: Has anyone had problems with buying a laptop from Office Depot?
I’m looking to buy a new laptop and Office Depot has a great deal for an hp dm4 for 749.99. I was just wondering if anyone had experience buying a laptop from there. I’ve been looking online and most places say that they’re a pain in the ass about buying a protection plan or whatnot. as far as the quality of the product, does it differ from lets say if i bought it from best buy?

Best answer:

Answer by godfather
the quality isn’t going to change. A laptop is a laptop whether you buy the same model from Walmart, Best Buy or the manufacturer themselves. Office Depot isn’t always too bad either..sure they push you to buy a protection plan for the thing but if you go into the store with the mindset you’re there to buy a laptop and thats it then no worries.

Q&A: When buying laptop graphics cards bundled with a laptop purchase, what do you get?

Question by : When buying laptop graphics cards bundled with a laptop purchase, what do you get?
I am buying an HP laptop, and chose an ATI Mobility HD 5370 graphics card as an option. The description says HDMI in it…does this mean the graphics card I chose will be integrated within the laptop, or is it something I have to plug into the HDMI port? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Fordry
There aren’t any normal laptops right now that have the ability to have a graphics card installed in them. the graphics chip is built right in to the system board. If you are doing a custom model, they have different boards with the different graphics chips and they put what you order in. The hdmi part just means it has an hdmi port that you can use to connect the laptop to a tv to display it on a tv. And just an fyi, lcd hdtv’s aren’t really any different than lcd computer monitors. So any 1080p lcd or plasma tv especially will have great resolution and perform really well as a computer monitor.

Edit – @William, have you ever opened up a laptop and seen how it is put together? Every single laptop from Dell, HP, Asus, Sony, Toshiba, etc……. has a system board that has the graphics chip built in, whether its a dedicated graphics chip with dedicated memory or an integrated graphics chip doesn’t matter, its still on the main system board. Integrated doesn’t have anything to do with being on the board, it means its built into the chipset instead of being a separate independant chip. There is no such thing as an expansion 3d graphics card in laptops except for a special setup Alienware tried to start a few years ago and a few crazy laptop models that are big enough that they actually house desktop cards in them.

What to be careful about when buying laptop in the US and then taking it to Europe?

Question by Sunshine528: What to be careful about when buying laptop in the US and then taking it to Europe?
I am planning on buying a laptop soon and will take it with me to Europe quite often. Is there something that I need to be careful with when taking it to Europe? Will DVDs bought in Europe play on this laptop?

Best answer:

Answer by bestonnet_00
The international warranty will only be valid outside the US for US citizens (which if your not a US citizen and the computer breaks down in Europe is really going to cause you a lot of trouble).

I wouldn’t expect DVDs bought in Europe to play on it (at least not without changing the setting so that DVDs bought in the US won’t play, and you can only do that a limited number of times).

In terms of power supply you probably won’t have any problems just using dumb plug adapters (which are pretty cheap), laptop power supplies tend to be able to handle any voltage and frequency you can find anywhere in the world. Though if you plug something other than your laptop bought in the US into the plug adapters make sure it can handle 230 V (or 220 V or 240 V, they’re all now the same thing) and 50 Hz (otherwise you’ll hear a bang and see smoke) and that if it has a switch to select input voltage that it is set to 230 or 220 or 240 not 110 or 115 or 100 or 127.
