I would think it should be OK as she will probably be using it mainly for MSN, Facebook and e-mail. These applications do not require much power, however, games will not work with such a low specification http://www.trilogicuk.co.uk

What is the screen resolution? too low a resoloution will be a PITA in particular I wouldn't reccomend a width below 1024 pixels as many websites design to this (height isn't so critical).

You won't be able to run modern games on such a machine, of course but there are plenty of older games that are still fun and will run just fine (though you may need to use CD cracks to get arround the lack of an internal CD drive on such machines).

As for cool I guess that is more an appearance thing, does it look sleek or does it look like an ugly peice of shit

Ok. Well Aienware is great and Ive actually customized my own. Although costly (around 1400 for mine) it really depends on what your looking for. I put a 320 GIG hard drive in for music and school work but alienware is specifically built for gaming which is also on my alienware, If you were looking for music space and no problems with viruses and good for school work go with a mac book or a mac book pro. The pros range from an extrodinary price of 1700 and up though which is definetely in my opinion to much.

Hi. If you can live with 8 Lbs then you might consider Dell XPS M1330. http://www.notebookreview.com/price/models.asp?brandID=0&productFamilyID=1007 Wicked pricey and you want at LEAST 2GB of RAM, maybe 4GB.

I go on ebay and get a ballpark number for what items go for. I do this because it's easy to assume that people that spent money did their homework and negotiated to a reasonable price.

Extended warranty covers the same components as the 1 st. year warranty, some offer a damage coverage for accidental damage like dropping, spills etc. check with your manufacturer. batteries are usually not covered as they can be changed, removed and charged many times before a problem occurs. One should always read the warranty coverage contract before accepting it.
Hope this helps

You could try placing an ad in your local paper or trade magazine, stating you take broken laptops. A good slant on this is that they shouldn't be disposed in landfills and sometimes it costs to dispose of them properly. Check with police departments, they're a big laptop userbase, though some of them use more rugged machines and typically do mass upgrading when hardware has gotten too old. School districts tend to use more desktops, but some of them provide laptops to the teachers, colleges/universities moreso. IT support companies use laptops, the ones you might want to contact would be those that provide software support and have no facilities for doing their own repairs.
I'm drawing a blank as to other types of companies might use laptops extensively. Start contacting some to get an idea.
